FCPS Inducts 1,200 New Teachers

As summer vacation in Fairfax County winds down, the hallways and classrooms at South County High school are already buzzing. Beginning Aug. 18, roughly 1,200 new and returning teachers — as well as those new to the school system — took part in a week-long induction program called “Great Beginnings: The Next Generation.”
Removing Barriers to College
Local services help students complete college paperwork, remove barriers.
LaQuita King relocated across the state from Chesapeake, Va., to Alexandria in the summer of 2013, moving into an apartment with her aunt and three cousins. King had just graduated from high school and was looking forward to taking classes at Northern Virginia Community College. So far, that hasn’t happened.
The End of an Era
After 33 years, Robinson’s Chip Rome retires.
It’s the end of an era at Robinson Secondary: Legendary Theater Director Chip Rome has retired. In 1981, he became the fourth drama teacher the school hired that year, and he more than provided stability. He spent all 33 years of his FCPS career there.
A Night at the Aquarium for Fairfax Youth
Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington members take a private overnight tour of Baltimore's National Aquarium.
Ten students from the Fairfax branch (Murraygate chapter) of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington got a sneak peak of Shark Week by spending the night among them at the Baltimore Aquarium at the seaport in Baltimore. They spent a “night at the museum” as part of the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program sponsored by COX Communications last Friday, July 25.
Workshop Promotes Science Education
On Tuesday, July 15, the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement (VISTA), in conjunction with the George Mason University College of Education and Human Development, held a day-long program that focused on advancing science education in Fairfax County schools.
New Principal at Laurel Ridge
Tonya Cox, who has worked in Fairfax County Public Schools for 23 years, began her role as principal of Laurel Ridge Elementary School in Fairfax on July 1.

They’re in “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.”
Students from Robinson Secondary and Woodson High play prominent roles in Westfield Summer Stage’s upcoming musical, “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.” Featuring a cast and crew of 85, all performances are at Westfield High, 4700 Stonecroft Boulevard in Chantilly.
Full-Day Mondays Start in September
Teachers promised planning time.
Full-day Mondays for all. After 40 years, Fairfax County Public Schools will give all elementary students "full Mondays" for more learning time — and more recess. During a School Board meeting Thursday, June 26, Superintendent Karen Garza said Mondays were cut in half for elementary students since 1972. "While not everyone tonight will embrace the change, we will engage the stakeholders," she told the board.
Cherry Run Celebrates 30 Years
School reflects on past, looks forward to renovations.
November 13, 1983 was dedication day for Cherry Run Elementary School, located just off Fairfax County Parkway in Burke. Over thirty years later, the school is celebrating its 30th anniversary, remembering years past and celebrating those to come.
Youth Suicide Prevention Training Offered Online
Interactive training helps adults deal with serious issues.
Following several incidents in the community involving youth and suicide, Laura Yager, the director of partnership and resource development for the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, said the community has recognized the need for youth suicide prevention.
On Mission ‘To Change the World’
Lake Braddock Class of 2014 graduates.
The Lake Braddock Secondary School Class of 2014 received their diplomas and threw their caps in the air, as over 650 seniors graduated on June 23. Staged in the Patriot Center at George Mason University, parents and friends cheered on the graduates from their seats in the gallery.
Lake Braddock Student Honored
JROTC AWARD - Cadet Julio Negron of Lake Braddock High School was presented with the Sons of the American Revolution Bronze Medal during a ceremony held May 28.
Fairfax County Students Receive DAR Awards
Providence Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has announced the 2014 recipients of two DAR awards. The DAR Youth Citizenship Medal is presented to fifth and sixth grade students who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. The Outstanding Work in American History Medal is presented to students in any grade for excellence in American history studies.
Summer With Books
Burke Centre Library kicks off summer reading program.
Burke Centre Library started their summer reading program on June 20. This year each branch of the Fairfax County Public Library created its own suggested reading lists. There are reading programs for adults, as well as children.
