LBSS Odyssey of the Mind Team Competes at World Level

The Lake Braddock Secondary School Odyssey of the Mind team has won the right to compete at the World Level Competition to be held at Iowa State University May 22-26. International and U.S. teams progress to the World Level after rigorous competition at the regional and state levels. Team members are CheyAnne Rivera, Crystal Luong, Rusty Ford, Noah Woodruff, Nick Wilcher, Nan Denette and Ryan Ford.

Cub Scouts Promoted to the Next Rank

On Sunday, May 20, Cub Scout Pack 1345 held their annual Advancement Ceremony at the Ponds Community Center. The Pack, chartered by Burke Center Conservancy, recognized the accomplishments of 42 scouts whose achievements during the year earned them advancement to the next cub scout rank. The pack also welcomed three new scouts that will form the next den of Tiger Cubs this fall.

Addressing ‘College Drinking Culture’

The Perils of the College Drinking Culture" forums continue through May.

It’s college decision time for Fairfax County seniors, and college-bound students and their parents are encouraged to attend an upcoming program that deals with binge drinking on college campuses. "The Perils of the College Drinking Culture" will be presented by the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County, in collaboration with the Fairfax County Police Department, in April and May at locations across the county.

Monitoring aggressive behavior is a primary concern of Fairfax County when conducting the annual Youth Survey. While fewer than 5 percent of students report gang activity or carrying a weapon, a majority of students have experienced bullying from one side or the other.

A private tour for seventh-grader who wants to become a U.S. Army Ranger.

"What do you want to do when you grow up?" This question, posed so often to young adults, typically results in ambiguous, pie-in-the-sky answers. Lake Braddock seventh grader and Springfield resident Travis Catina had a very specific response to that question, one that when published in the Dec. 30 Children’s Issue of The Connection caught the attention of U.S. Army officers at the Pentagon and earned him and his family a private tour.

State Senate Committee Kills Effort to Overturn King's Dominion Law

The Senate Committee on Education and Health voted today to kill an effort overturning the King's Dominion Law, which mandates that school divisions across Virginia begin classes after Labor Day.
